So, for our warriors' food for thought, I want to share a story, an experience that I had yesterday.
It started when one of my clients texted me. I said, “Hey man, how’s it going?” And he replied, “Man, you know what, I don’t know if this thing is for me.” The thing he meant was not my program, he was talking about his job in sales. It was getting hard.
I messaged him back immediately and asked “What’s wrong?” He told me, “You know what, this is just really hard. I don’t think it’s for me.” I asked if he was free to talk right now, and so we jumped on the phone. It turns out the job wasn’t the real problem – he was just getting tired of rejection. It was making him doubt the value of what he had to offer to people. And he was allowing the rejection to make him question if it was worth it.
So, I told him, “Dude, I can totally relate.” When I first started my coaching business, I faced a lot of rejection. I probably swam through over a hundred no’s before I found that one client who said, “You know what, I’m going to give it a try.”
“Really?” he said. I replied, “Yeah! I had nights when I cried.” Whether he believed me or not, it was true.
I told him that what had kept me going was believing, really believing, that someone was out there who would find value in what I offered. And because I believed that person was out there, I would think: How and when am I going to find him or her? Am I going to meet him or her at the grocery store? Am I going to meet them in the gym? And I want to be their friend, because I know that what I had to offer could change their life.
I told him, “Dude, you know that what you are doing is valuable, so don’t take the rejection personally. They’re not saying no to YOU, they’re saying no to what you’re trying to bring to them.”
If you know you’re bringing value to people’s lives, don’t allow all those no’s to cause you to doubt. I had poured my heart and soul into this program, and I believed it was going to change lives. Because of my deep conviction, and because I was confident about the work I had done – all the time and effort I had devoted to creating something valuable – I refused to allow rejection to spread doubt.
It’s the same for you, I told my client. I advised him to go out and make a friend. While you’re at it, add value for that person, and see what happens. So, he shoots me a text about three hours later and he’s really excited. “Dude, I met this restaurant owner. I became his friend and he wants to use my service!” “Dude,” I said, “that’s awesome!”
So really, the moral of this story is that confidence in your belief is like a muscle. You’ve got to exercise it often and consistently. And when things get challenging and you start to question yourself, recenter yourself, refocus yourself, and return to what you believe. Say to yourself, “I know what I’m doing is valuable.”
Make the decision to truly believe and be confident in yourself and what you’re doing. The results will come. My client decided just to believe – to believe that he was adding value to the world, and that he was going to go out and find just one person to be his friend. As a result, he found his next customer!
That could be you. You just gotta believe. I think ultimately, you must decide (1) if you really believe in what you’re doing, (2) that you believe you’re offering value, (3) that you focus on the people you want to impact. If you can do that, don’t let anything or anybody take that from you. The second you lose that, you truly are defeated.
So, when it feels like things are stacked against you, keep your belief in yourself. If you have your confidence and your faith, hang onto that. If you have that, you haven’t lost. There’s still a chance to be victorious.
“You add value to people’s lives, believe it and others will, too.”
