How To Reach & Keep Health/Fitness Goals

November 09, 20226 min read

NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS ARE RIDICULOUS

This is very important! So many people set New Year resolutions, and it’s ridiculous. Why? Because a tiny fraction of people who make those resolutions are actually able to keep them.

DOING IT RIGHT ISN’T RIDICULOUS

I would like to help you make, reach and keep your new year's health and fitness goals.

The method I’m going to show you can apply to many kinds of goal setting. But I want to just focus on health and fitness goals. That’s what I’m into, it’s what I do, it’s what I specialize in. And it is part of what I do to help my clients succeed.

GIVE THEM A SMART KISS

What? Give my goals a smart kiss? How do I kiss my health goals? What makes them smart? Come on, now, this sounds ridiculous.

But it’s not. Because I’m going to teach you how to do that and show you how it can help you achieve the goals you want and deserve.

START BY SETTING S.M.A.R.T. GOALS

I follow the exact same steps of the S.M.A.R.T. acronym when I’m setting any goal, whether it relates to my business, personal life, or health and fitness.

S… it must be Specific

M… it must be Measurable

A… it must be Assignable

R… it must be Realistic

T… it must be Time-Related

Later, I’ll show you in detail how S.M.A.R.T. goal setting can work for you.

NOW ADD THE K.I.S.S.

The next step is to give your S.M.A.R.T. goals a good K.I.S.S. Here is what the letters of this acronym mean:

K… Keep

I… It

S… Stupid

S… Simple

If your stated goal is too complex, intricate, or abstract, you’re unlikely to be able to keep it.

So, keep it stupid simple

LET’S GET SPECIFIC

If your goal is not Specific, you’re not going to know when you reach it!

State your goal as clearly and simply as possible. Focus on one goal at a time, then once you hit it, go on to the next. Don’t just say you want to lose weight, state specifically that you want to lose 15 pounds. Don’t just say you want to be thinner, state that you’d like to lose five inches. Don’t just say you want to start running, state that you want to run to the end of the block or run a 5K.

Don’t set a thousand goals, focus on the first goal. Find one that can produce a “domino effect,” one that could trigger a whole cascade of progress that could affect the rest of your life.

MEASURE IT

If it’s not Measurable, you won’t know if you’re making progress! This can set you up to get mighty discouraged.

So how do you know if you are making progress? That is what I help my clients do. We figure out a way to measure the individual steps that lead to your goal, then we track the progress. It’s not just that the numbers on the scale are moving, or that you are losing inches, but we measure how you are feeling and what habits are you developing. There are many ways of measuring success!

ASSIGN IT: WHO OR WHAT DO YOU NEED?

If it’s not Assignable, you don’t yet know who or what else you will need to reach your goal. You need to identify what is required to achieve success. The skills, expertise or knowledge that you don’t have, can be gotten from others.

How can you obtain the help you need? Ask yourself, what kind of help do I require? Is there something you can assign to someone else to help you? Is there an investment that you need to make? Should I hire a coach?

I have hired a coach to be able to scale my own business. This is something I need, so I hired someone who has the skills that I need to reach my goals. I looked for someone that does what I want to do and for somebody at the level that I want to reach. I made the investment to get what I needed to succeed. The more skin you have in the game, the more likely you are to DO it.

TIME TO GET REAL

If your goal is not Realistic, you’re not going to attain it. Work on setting realistic goals, one goal at a time.

Base your goals on what is realistic, right now. Ask yourself some tough questions. Is my thinking based on what someone else has achieved? Am I comparing myself to someone because I want to be better than them? Do I want to be like them?

Don’t look at me and say, “I want to be like Donny, and I want to reach his level, or I’m going to set the same goals that he sets.” Depending on where you are today, that may not be realistic.

Sit down and get real. Ask yourself: Am I setting a goal that is realistic for me?

TIME, AND TIME AGAIN

If your goal is not Time-Related (meaning there’s no deadline set to achieve your goal), you won’t feel any urgency to make it happen.

You need to set a deadline! When do you want to reach your goal? When you set a time-frame, it becomes a subconscious priority. Once you define it, your subconscious says, “okay, we need to make this happen.” Now your body and mind are working on auto-pilot to take the necessary steps to bring that to fruition.

SET YOUR GOALS NOW

Going into 2023, I’ve already identified my goals in my business, my life, and my financial and physical health. I made sure that every goal had each of the S.M.A.R.T. components. I encourage you to do the same!

Make sure that you’re Keeping It Stupid Simple.

Is your goal genuinely simple? Is it easy to describe to someone? Can you tell someone how you measure success? Can you define the skills and people you need to do it? Are you clear that your goal is realistic? Can you tell someone your deadline? You don’t want it to be ambiguous, you don’t want it to be abstract… you want it to be smart and simple.

So, going into this year, how do you reach and keep your health goals? It’s very simple. Give them a SMART KISS.

Donny Day saw a gap in the fitness industry that has never been offered before. With fifteen collective company awards to his name, mentorship of over 100 fitness managers, 1000 personal trainers, and over 40,000 clients, Donny Day had a vision.

Donny Day is one of the fortunate people who knows what he wants early in life.

“I was young enough to want it so bad. And after spending countless hours training with other trainers, following them around, taking notes from everybody, begging for information, and doing all my certifications, before I knew it, I became the number one trainer for Bally Total Fitness in the State of Texas. And I was just 18 years old when that happened.”

By the time he reached 20 years old, he had an opportunity to move to Los Angeles and work at LA Fitness. Striving to be the best fitness trainer he could be, Donny used the experience to excel, working 12 hours a day, and promoting to Manager.

Eventually, Donny moved back to Texas to train private clients and obtain new certifications to improve his fitness knowledge. Shortly after, he became a Manager for Just Fitness’ Personal Training Department where he broke multiple sales records, and was promoted to Vice President for their 20 million dollar project with 20 clubs. During his time as Vice President Donny Day visited and studied the nation’s top fitness trends in order to build various personal training and group personal training programs within the Just Fitness business.

Using insight from his previous work, letting experiences mold him, and learning from his obstacles, Donny Day then created Beat The Dad Bod USA & Peak Zone Fitness, a fitness startup featured in over 200 different media outlets and loved by its customers with over 600 perfect reviews.
